Pig-Butchering Scams

What it is

Pig butchering scams are sophisticated investment fraud schemes in whereby scammers build rapport with victims before gradually introducing a fake investment opportunity. Fraudsters encourage the victim to invest in a platform that shows fake profits, allowing small withdrawals at first to appear credible. Eventually, the victim is manipulated into sending larger amounts until the scammer disappears.

How it works

1
Contact starts on social, dating apps, or messaging.
2
They avoid meeting/video calls; claim to be abroad.
3
Emotional bonding; then urgent requests for money.
4
In pig butchering, they move you to a “trading platform”, show fake gains, allow small withdrawals, then push larger deposits.
Warning Signs and Red Flags
Fast moving “intense” relationship; secrecy requests.
Avoids video/in person; introduces “doctors/lawyers/agents”.
Pushes you to invest on a “platform” they recommend.
Pressure to send money via unusual methods.
What to do now
Stop engaging; don’t send money.
Talk to someone you trust; scammers isolate victims.
Report to Police and MFSA if investments are involved.
Preserve messages, profiles, screenshots.
